Crochet by Ruby is a small pattern studio that writes crochet patterns the way we wish every pattern had been written when we were learning.

It started with a single cardigan that did not fit. The pattern was lovely, the photos were lovely, and the finished sweater was 15 cm too small because the pattern never said what ease it was designed with or how big the finished piece would be. That is a frustrating way to spend forty hours and a bag of good wool. We decided that any pattern we put our name on would tell you everything: the finished measurements, the ease, the gauge after washing, the yardage for every size, and where to change it if you want to.
Today the studio is two people and a rotating group of testers. One of us designs and writes, the other grades, edits and takes the photographs. Every pattern is worked at least twice in the studio before it goes to testers, and testers make it in sizes we did not, on hooks and in yarns we did not choose. Their notes go straight into the pattern before it is published. You can read exactly how that works in how patterns are tested here.
The learn section is free and always will be. If you are starting from your very first chain, begin with holding the hook and yarn and work through in order. If you get stuck on one of our patterns, open a ticket; we would rather answer a question than have you put the project in a drawer.
